BERGAMASCA SHEPHERD

Go to Index

HEIGHT: 55 - 60 cm.
WEIGHT: 26 - 38 kg.
LIFE EXPECTANCY: 13 - 15 years.
CHARACTERISTICS of a BERGAMASCA SHEPHERD
ADVICE 564
The Bergamasca Shepherd is intelligent, quiet and patient. This makes it a perfect guardian and company dog, good for different works.
ADVICE 565
Frequent showers are not beneficial for the Bergamasca Shepherd. More than two showers per year could eliminate the natural fat that covers its skin.
ADVICE 566
In its six to seven month of life, you can brush it once every two weeks, but as soon as you notice the minimal sight of messy locks formation, you should keep yourself from brushing the dog as frequently.
ADVICE 567
Even when it is convenient to touch it the least possible, you should be alert to the formation of hair balls that could be produced during the fallen of the puppy's soft hair. If this happens, you should try to get rid of them with your hands and reduce its size with precaution.
ADVICE 568
After that you can make occasional superficial brushes to straighten the locks.
ADVICE 569
When lock formations begin, the soft brushing should be reduced to the back.
ADVICE 570
This shepherd dog doesn't loose the hair in every molt, but increases the length of the already formed locks.
ADVICE 571
The coat begins to be formed enough when the dog is three months old; from this moment on, the coat is already considered the one of an adult Bergamasca and it will be brush occasionally and superficially.
DESCRIPTION of the BERGAMASCA SHEPHERD
HEAD:
The length of the snout is the same as the length of the skull. The skin shouldn't be thick or form wrinkles. The skull is wide; and it is also wide and rounded in the frontal region.
EYES:
The eyes are mainly big, the iris is dark brown in color, even when it is frequent for it to vary according to the color of hair. The expression is sweet, kind and caring.
EARS:
They are born high on the head, they are partially fallen; it means, that they fall only from the terminal thirds to the rounded tip. When the dog is alert the ears raise slightly on the base.
NECK:
The upper profile is slightly convex. The neck is a little shorter than the head.
BODY:
The cross highlights a lot from the straight back profile. The lumbar region presents certain convexity and the hindquarters are kind of oblique. The cross is tall and long.
TAIL:
Placed on the back third of the hindquarters, it is thick and strong at the base and it diminishes progressively to the tip. It is covered with goat hair slightly curled. The dog swings the tail when it is in motion.
FRONT EXTREMITIES:
Seen from the front and the side, they are well placed. The height from the floor to the elbow reaches 50 percent of the height to the cross. They are well proportioned to the size of the dog.
BACK EXTREMITIES:
They are well adapted to the size of the dog. The back feet should have the same characteristics of the front one.
SKIN:
It should be fine on the whole body, but especially on the ears and the front extremities; it should be well stuck to the body. The neck should not have a double chin and the head should not have wrinkles. The color of the mucous and the third eyelid should be black.
HAIR:
Very abundant, long and with a different texture according to the region. Its texture is rough (goat hair) particularly over the front area of the body. From the first half of the chest to the back side, and especially its extremities, the hair tends to form locks or is already organized in locks depending on the age of the dog; these locks should come from the upper part of the back and fall on the sides of it. Over the head, the hair is less rough and covers the eyes. The hair should be distributed evenly on the extremities, forming soft locks that reach the floor in the front as in the back.
COLOR:
The color of the coat can even be gray or with gray spots in all of the possible shades; from the light gray to the dark gray or even black. The light reddish color and Isabella are also accepted.
The totally black coat is acceptable as long as it is matte. The white color is not allowed under any circumstances. White spots are tolerated when its surface doesn't exceed the fifth part of the total surface of hair.
HEIGHT:
The ideal height to the cross on the males is 60 cm, with a tolerance of 2 cm more or less. For the females, it is 56 cm, with the same tolerance.
The weight for males is around 32 to 38 kg and for females around 26 to 32 kg.
