DESCRIPTION of a |
The general noble appearance of the German dogo is a combination of strength elegance & majestic with a well built body, tall and strong. It has a robust, nobility, balanced and well proportioned outline, along with a very expressive face, that impresses the onlooker by its gallant stature. It is considered the Apollo of the canine breeds. |
HEAD: |
It is long and narrow, with a thick and squared snout. |
TRUFFEL: |
Well developed, wider than round, with sell opened nostrils. Must be black, with the exception of the Harlequin German dogo (black and white spots). In these a black nose is preferable, but a butterfly (partially pigmented or reddish) pigmentation is allowed. |
SNOUT: |
Deep and rectangular, as much as possible. Well defined side lips. The lips are dark in color. On Harlequin dogs part pigmentation is allowed or reddish colored. |
TEETH: |
Wide and well developed maxillas. Strong scissor like bit. Complete set of teeth (42 teeth according to the normal dental formation). |
EYES: |
Medium large, round, as dark as possible, with an intelligent and clever look. On the Blue German gogo, the ayes are allowed to be a little lighter. On Harlequin's light eyes or different color eyes are permitted. Well adhered eyelids. |
EARS: |
High placed, down by nature, medium sized. The front borders hand forwards towards the cheeks. |
NECK: |
Long, clean, muscular. Well placed form with an arched line; the diameter decreases slightly towards the head. It keeps its neck up, but towards the front with a slight inclination. |
TAIL: |
It reaches the tibia-tertian articulation. High and wide insertion, thinning out to the tip. When at ease, it hangs down forming a natural curve. When excited or in movement it carries it with the slight shape of a sable, but without out going too over the dorsal line. Thick hair is undesirable under the tail. The chest reaches the joints of the elbows. The well arched ribs extend backwards. The thorax is large with a well defined chest. |
FRONT EXTREMITIES: |
The shoulders are very muscular. And the shoulder blades are long and inclining. The front legs are strong, muscular, held close to the body, and should be a little longer than the shoulder blades. The elbows without any inward or outward deviations. The forelegs are strong, muscular and completely straight when looked at from he front and side. The front feet are round, well arched and compact (cat feet). The nails hort and the darkest possible. |
BACK EXTREMITIES: |
The skeleton is covered by strong muscles that make hindquarters, hips and thighs have a wide and round appearance. The back extremities are well angled, when seen from behind they are parallel to the front ones. |

THIGHS: |
Long, wide & muscular, Strong knees, placed almost vertically under the hips articulation. Long legs approximately the same length as the thighs. With developed muscles. |
BACK FEET: |
Round, arched & compact (cat feet). Short, strong and dark nails. |
HAIR: |
Adhered, well pigmented on solid color dogs. On the Harlequin's the color is distributed corresponding to the spots. |
MANE: |
Texture of mane: very short, dense, smooth and with a bright appearance. |
MANE COLORS: |
Depending on its color, the German dogo is classified in the following varieties. |
Tabby |
Pale golden colored or dark golden with tiger like black stripes that follow the angle of the ribs. It is preferred when it has a black face mask. |
Lion |
Lion golden pale or intense. It is preferred when it has a dark face mask. Small white spots on the chest or feet are unwanted. |
Harlequin |
The basic color is pure white, if possible not splotched. With jet black spots, spread out evenly throughout the body. Grey or brown spots are not wanted. |
Black |
On jet black dogs, white spots are allowed. Also including "tigershawl", where black covers the body like a shawl , but the snout, neck, belly, legs and the tip of the tail can be white. |
Blue |
Pure steel blue color, white spots on the chest and feet are allowed. |
