| It has a brave character; but fearful of dangers, intelligent and easy to train. Sporty, resistant and full of energy. |

| Due to its height it is a dog used to work underground and it only fits in badger holes. Rat exterminator and a quiet rabbit hunter. It is used in Ireland for dog fights and as a guardian. Due to its physical resistance its ideal for sporty people. |

| HEAD: |
| It must be strong as a whole, but not bulky. The hair should be the same color as the body. The skull is flat and clear between the ears, not very wide. |
| TEETH: |
| Large, regular scissor like bite, without prognathism or enognathism. |
| EYES: |
| Dark or hazel, not very big or jutting out, well placed. |
| EARS: |
| Small to medium, carried towards the front, in the same level as the skull. Dark colored hair is allowed at the base of the ears and it is normal in this breed to have a light overcoat. "rose or flying" shaped ears are considered a defect. |
| BODY: |
| Compact and not too long. Straight back. Deep chest, well arched ribs. |
| TAIL: |
| Well placed , not very thick. Carried cheerfully. Cut at one third of its total length, or after the sixth vertebrae, assuming its well balanced and in proportion with the dog. |
| FRONT EXTREMITIES: |
| Seen from any angle the legs should be straight, well boned and muscular. |
| BACK EXTREMITIES: |
| Well developed and with powerful muscles. Angled knees. |
| FEET: |
| Small and together. The nails must be preferably black, but various colors are allowed. |
| MOVEMENT: |
| Always in a straight line, coming and going. Close elbows. Seen from the side its movements are coordinated, loose and light. |
| COAT: |
| The hair is of soft texture and silky to the touch, not hard (except on young dogs). The preparation of hair is allowed. |
| COLOR: |
| Any kind of a light tawny to a golden reddish shade is allowed. |
| SIZE & WEIGHT |
| The cross height on males is 46 to 48 cm; on females it's a little less. The weight varies from 15 to 18 kg. |
