A real fun game is for the dog to bring back objects or toys, but before that, the dog must learn to hold objects or toys in its mouth.
|
Don't use sound toys in this exercise because the dog will want to chew them. Use a small piece of rolled carpet or a special roll like the ones you will find in the market for this purpose. You should limit yourself to prize the dog with caresses and compliments because the dog should keep on holding the object in its mouth. |
HOLDING AN OBJECT or a Toy |
1. Get on your knees next to the dog, which should be sitting. Hold the leash under your knees and with your left arm go round the head of the dog. |
ADVICE 303 |
Open the dog's mouth kindly while you say "good". The jaw is softly opened with the thumb. |
2. After showing the dog the object it is supposed to bring, but without giving it to the animal, and when you notice the dog is mad or nervous, hold its head high and put the object in its mouth while you give the order "hold" |
3. The dog should hold the object voluntarily and correctly, right behind its canine teeth and with the tongue placed backwards. Effusively congratulate the dog saying "good" and caressing it tenderly. |
PICKING UP THE OBJECT ot Dog Toy |
1. Now you can teach the dog to pick the object up from the floor. Incite the dog by putting the object on the floor in front of its snout. |
2. Lower the object to the floor. The dog must be interested and carefully follow the object with its sight. Reward it saying "good". |
3. Leave the object on the floor without dropping it. Order "hold" when the dog gives a step forward to grab the object with its mouth. |
4. Take your hand away from the object and the dog will be able to pick it up. At the same time, repeat the order "hold", making sure that the dog doesn't let the object fall. |
