Jumping on people and following them with excitement are natural activities of the dog, but they can be annoying and even dangerous for people as well as for the animal.

By teaching your dog to remain down when you order so you will be able to avoid these inappropriate actions. |
ADVICE 287 |
Don't use only verbal orders but also hand signs in order to let the dog understand them even when it is not close to us. |
1. With the dog at your left and in the lie down position, give the dog the order "quiet". With the leash in your right hand move the left one to the dog and begin walking. |
2. Hold the visual contact with the dog and keep the leash floating with you move away from the dog. |
ADVICE 288 |
Don't offer the dog food rewards when you teach it to remain quiet or it will come to you to get the prize. |
3. Still holding the visual contact, stand still and repeat "quiet". Congratulate it saying "good". Increase the duration of this position gradually until the dog remains down for several minutes. |
4. Once you have taught the dog to remain still in your presence, you can teach to it without you in front of it. Repeat the first three steps and the go out of the room. Make sure the dog doesn't move by using a mirror. |
5. A few minutes later, appear again and reward it saying "good". Do it calmly and quietly while the dog is still. Don't excite the dog or reward it for standing up. |
6. Let the dog stand up from its position with the words "good" or "ok". Don't congratulate it too much because its excitation would such a good reward that the dog will only want to finish this exercise and not the training itself. |

You should teach your dog to remain down even when an unexpected activity takes place. This will guarantee the security of the dog and your own one, as well as it shows your obedience. |
