CHARACTERISTICS of the Perdiguero of Burgos |
For almost decades the Perdiguero of Burgos has almost been forgotten. Now it is considered a show dog, very valued for its skills as a bird and rabbit hunter. |

DESCRIPTION of the Perdiguero of Burgos |
Good sized hunting dog; well developed head, compact trunk and strong extremities, with fallen ears and short hair.
With a sweet and very noble look, docile and intelligent, it has an excellent character. Rustic well balanced and settled, it's a good show dog, specially used for feather and hare hunting on any terrain because of its strength, specially its method of hunting.

HEAD: |
Large and strong, with a well developed skull, strong snout and head and ringlet fallen ears. The skull-head combination seen from above must be moderately rectangular, continuously diminishing towards the truffle, without looking like a pointy snout. The relation between the length of the skull and the face is of 6/5. Divergent skull-facial lines. |
SKULL: |
Wide, strong and convex profile, with a central well marked crease, square shaped and not very marked occipital crest. |
FACE: |
Straight profile or with slight inclination towards the truffle. Wide throughout its length, shouldn't look pointy. Wide nasal stem. |
TRUFFLE: |
Dark brown, moist, large and wide with well opened nostrils. |
EARS: |
Long & fallen, triangular shaped. When at rest they are placed in the same line as the eyes. They fall nicely like a ringlet. Without stretching they should reach the lips without reaching the truffle. Soft and smooth to the touch, very fine skin and hair; marked veins. When alert the ears are placed high. |
TEETH: |
Strong, white & healthy, scissor like bite. Al premolars are present. |
EYES: |
Medium, almond shaped, preferably hazel colored, with a noble and sweet looking sometimes looking sad. |
NECK: |
Strong & powerful; with a wide base and it widens towards the trunk. The upper border is slightly arched. Lower border with a marked double chin, starting from its commissure. It is double without being exaggerated. |
TRUNK: |
Square, strong and robust with powerful chest and ribs, giving it both strength and agility. |
TORSO: |
Strong & muscular. Well developed ribs, round, not flat. Well marked intercostals and broad and they go towards the spare ribs. The thoracic circumference must be the cross height plus ¼ of it. Medium back, wide and muscular, giving it a powerful look. |
HINDQUARTERS: |
Wide & strong. Its inclination, is preferably less than 45 degrees in relation with the torso-lumbar line and the floor. Raised hindquarters, with the same or less height than the cross. |
TORSO-LUMBAR LINE: |
Straight and horizontal or slightly down from the cross. Never up tight and without oscillations when moving. |
CHEST: |
Wide, deep, reaches the level of the elbow, muscular and strong. Marked sternum point. |
BELLY AND FLANKS: |
Belly slightly cropped towards its genitals. Fallen sides and well marked flanks. |
TAIL: |
Medium placed with a thick root. It is amputated between a third and half its length. |
FRONT EXTREMITIES: |
Perfectly aplomb, straight and parallel, strong boned with well developed feet. |
BACK: |
Moderately oblique, muscular. The scapula must be approximately the same length as the front legs. |
FRONT LEGS: |
Strong and well muscled, its length is 2/3 of the foreleg. |
FORELEG: |
Strong, with marked tendons. Straight, well aplomb and its elbows are close to the body. Its length is double pf the total length of the ankle (metacarpal bones) to the floor. |
FRONT FEET: |
Cat like, with tight fingers, strong and high phalanxes. Dark nails. Robust feet tuber; wide and hard pads. Moderate inter-toed membrane. |

BACK EXTREMITIES: |
Strong and muscular, strong boned and aplomb with good angles, well marked and deviated hocks, giving it a powerful and solid look. |
THIGHS: |
Very strong with an evident view of the muscles, well marked and developed. Its length is ¾ of the leg. |
LEG: |
Long & strong boned with double the length of the metatarsus. |
HOCKS: |
Marked with a visible tendon. |
METATARSUS: |
Strong boned and perpendicular to the floor. |
BACK FEET: |
They are cat like, similar to the front ones, but slightly longer. |
MOVEMENT: |
The typical movement of this breed is that of an economic trot, loose and strong, without leaning to the sides or ambling. |
SKIN: |
Elastic, but not loose, thick abundant and pinkish without spots. All the mucous membranes are to be brown, not black. |
HAIR: |
Dense of medium thickness, short, smooth and spread about the whole body including the inter-digital spaces. Thinner on the head, ears and extremities. |
COAT: |
The basic colors of hair are white and liver. These colors are mixed irregularly making up layers tainted in liver, grayish liver, dotted with liver and other combinations that vary depending on what color is predominant; white or liver, making the white spots bigger or smaller. |
A very frequent characteristic, although not necessary, is a clear white spot on the forehead and the ears always splotched uniformly with liver. Well marked liver spots are irregularly distributed on the animal. The same happens with white hair, which can form spots on the coat without them being very big. |
SIZE: |
Cross height on males is 62 to 67 cm and 59 to 64 cm on females. In this breed there is often a clear distinction between genders, males being more uniform and females vary more being less bulky. |
