IF THE DOG DOESN'T OBEY THE ORDER
|
ADVICE 290 |
If the dog moves while you are watching it through the mirror, come back to the room and move around it in the dog's sight while it remains down. |
HOW TO DISTRACT THE DOG |
ADVICE 291 |
In order to prepare the dog for training in more distracted environments, make loud noises while you are watching the dog through the mirror. |

|
ADVICE 292 |
If the dog begins to move, appear again and repeat the order "lie down". Don't make the mistake of running to the dog or get mad because this will only excite the dog. |
HOLDING THE ORDER |
The benefits of teaching your dog to remain down for a long time would be profitable for you as well as for the dog. In that way you will be able to take it shopping with you or even to work, sure that when you give the order to remain down you will find it in the same position when you come back. |
This requires patient training, but time and effort is invested in getting a reliable partner. |
1. Place the dog next to your armchair and give it the order "lie down-quiet". Hold the dog's leash loose. |
2. When the dog begins moving, grab it by the collar and pull it softly backwards until you get the dog on the previous position. Say "NO" and repeat the order "lie down-quiet". |
3. If, after a few minutes, the dog tries to stand up again, you have to immediately intervene. Say "NO" as soon as it stands up and insist with the "lie down-quiet" to reinforce the lie down position. |
4. After that, the dog will assume a more relaxed position, laying on a side. It is easier for the dog to stand up from the "sphinx" position and when it lies on a side it means that the dog is accepting your order. |
5. Twenty minutes later, the dog will still remain in a totally relaxed position. |
ADVICE 293 |
Gradually increase the duration of this exercise in many training sessions until you can totally rely on your dog. |
