The fact that our dog pulls the leash is the most common problem. It can be caused by boredom or excitement about something the dog likes, but it can also be a manifestation of the dominant conduct.
|
ADVICE 369 |
Don't try to beat the dog in strength by pulling the leash. If your dog pulls persistently, go back to the basic obedience orders and apply the solutions suggested there. |
ADVICE 370 |
Sometimes, the same leash incites the dog to pull. Therefore, it is important not to use it as a force instrument. You should find out why the dog pulls the leash before trying to get rid of this custom. |
THE SOLUTION |
1. Begin walking with the dog on your left side, holding the leash with both hands. When the dog pulls it, slide your left hand up to the collar and pull firmly. |
2. Once the dog is in the correct position, order it to sit. Begin walking, this time giving the dog the order "next to me" and repeat it every time it pulls the leash. |
3. As soon as the dog walks quietly next to you without pulling the leash, reward it with food. Increase little by little the distance of the walk, but not the time of the sessions. |
OTHER SOLUTIONS |
CHANGE OF DIRECTION |
ADVICE 371 |
When the dog pulls, surprise it immediately changing the direction. Congratulate the dog when it follows you. |
HAND SIGNS |
ADVICE 372 |
When the dog throws itself forwards, give the order "wait" and put your right hand in front of its snout. Hold the leash firmly with your left hand. |
DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO RESISTANCE |
ADVICE 373 |
Go round your waist with the leash fastened to the collar. Hold it loose and order the dog to go next to you with the food incentive or verbal orders. |
THE LEASH AS A HARNESS |
ADVICE 374 |
To keep the dog close and reduce the tension over the dog's neck, use the leash as a harness. |

OTHER PROBLEMS |
CHEWING AND CLIMBING |
For young dogs, the leashes are toys, they love chewing them and climbing on them. |
ADVICE 375 |
Sprinkle the leash with something bitter. When the dog bites it or climbs on it, the disgusting taste will punish it more than your quarrel. |
SUDDEN HURLING |
Some dogs fall down when they are ordered "next to me", others take it as a game and begin rolling on the floor. |
ADVICE 376 |
If the dog falls down, take a step backwards and show the dog a toy to incite it and induce it to stand up. |
