Choosing a Puppy Dog

Go to Index

GETTING A PUPPY
It is not easy to choose a puppy from a litter when they are eight or nine weeks old. It is convenient that the person who is going to make the election is accompanied by someone with enough experience that can give proper advice.
The puppies should be happy and playful, so those that stay in corners and keep a passive attitude are not recommendable, even if we feel sorry for them.
ADVICE 7
It is important for the family to agree with the acquisition of a dog, because if it is not like that, this can provoke discussions among the family members, with the risk that the animal will notice it and it will have a repercussion on its character.
You have to consider the responsibilities one should acquire, because the animal will share your life with you. Factors such as breed, gender, size, character and attention the animal requires will have an influence when choosing a puppy, as well as the mission the animal will perform.
ADVICE 8
It is not the same to choose a dog for surveillance and guardianship actions than a hunting or simply company animal.
ADVICE 9
The puppy should never be more than one month and a half old before it is separated from its mother. It is even preferable to wait until it is two or three months old.
Some specialists recommend the acquisition to be made when the puppy is already six or eight weeks old. This moment is considered favorable since it is then when the lifetime bonds are established, which allows the animal to recognize the humans as their peers keeping the dog from showing itself as solitary and inaccessible. Besides that, the alimentary patterns are established in this period and, which is more important, the puppy is very receptive to learning. Keep in mind that the younger the puppy is the better you can train it.
A very important thing you have to keep in mind is the expenses that having a dog will originate. Form the price we have paid to acquire it up to daily feeding, veterinary, grooming, taxes…
MALE OR FEMALE
There is no correct or incorrect decision in this area; you can only value the pros and cons that bring choosing a male or a female.
It is basically a matter of preferences. A female dog has two heats a year and each of them lasts approximately two weeks.
There are pills and injections that can interrupt an undesired pregnancy, as long as it is detected on time and under the supervision of a veterinary.
ADVICE 10
If our intention is to breed, it is convenient to get information from a canine society about what males are the most appropriate for our females.
ADVICE 11
In general lines, the males are less caring and bigger than the females.
Even belonging to the same breed, some dogs shouldn't be mated with each other because you can cause problems such as blindness, deafness and color fading.
LOOKING FOR A DOG
When getting a dog, you have to decide where to buy it, analyzing each of the possibilities to get a positive result and not to get surprises. You can't go on the street to buy a dog as if you were buying an electrical appliance. You can look for professional or private breeders, specialized stores or the animal protector society.
PROFESSIONAL BREEDERS
The main advantage of this alternative is that the breeder, either professional or amateur, offer you better guarantees than other places because they are specialized in these operations and they guarantee you a vast knowledge of the dog's needs. Besides that, professional breeders have a very wide variety of breeds among which we can choose the most appropriate one.
PRIVATE BREEDERS
ADVICE 12
Amateur breeders, as a rule, only breed a determined breed of dog, taking care that their animals come from the best bloodlines.
In this case you have to keep in mind if the owner of the litter has matted the female with the adequate male, if the matting was desired or it was accidental, etc. This is very important when it is time to acquire since, as we have already said, the matting between dogs of different breeds can originate malformations on the puppies.
ADVICE 13
The inconvenience of this option is that a private breeder doesn't have the same knowledge than a professional one and therefore, they can't assure you than the mother of the litter was appropriately cared for.
PET SHOP
The success of the acquisition of a puppy in a pet shop will depend on the professionalism of the store.
ADVICE 14
The most recommendable stores to acquire a puppy are the ones that are specialized in determined breeds of dogs.
More and more every time, they tend to expose the puppies in showcases. This tendency is very important because it is better for the animals to stay in its breeder until they are sold, rather than having them with other dogs for days without the necessary space to exercise as much as their age needs.
ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY
ADVICE 15
Only if you want the company of an animal regardless of its breed, you can go to the Animal Protection Society.
ADVICE 16
The first thing you should do once you have acquired the animal is to take it to a veterinary.
This advice is easy to understand since these animals have been exposed to contagious diseases. The veterinary will determine the dog's health state and in its case, the treatment to follow.
