A very sexual behavior is natural, but it can be annoying.
|
ADVICE 437 |
The problems related with the sex, such as urine marks, wandering, guardianship of the territory, the fights and excess protection, are more likely to happen in the male dogs and they are easier to dominate with dogs that have been castrated. |
ADVICE 438 |
Letting your dog mate whenever it wants can turn into a problem in the long term. It is possible for the dog to present too much sexual behavior. |
The sterilization of the female dogs can sometimes increase the dominant behavior of the female dogs that has been previously sterilized. |
THE SEXUAL SUBSTITUTE |
If a female dog is not in the heat, it won't let the male mount it. Only few dogs find receptive females, so they try to mount on their masters. This behavior that also the females have and that is harmless, even when annoying, can begin before the puppy reaches puberty. |
ADVICE 439 |
If you let the puppy try mounting on people will be difficult to control once the puppy becomes an adult. |
Solution |
1. Every time the dog tries to mount the arm or the leg of a person, say "NO", get it apart with the leash and lock it up for a minute. The dogs that are too sexual look for any kind of physical contact even to be punished, so avoid contact. |
2. Locking the dog up is a symbolic gesture and it should last only little time. |
3. After showing indifferent to the dog for a couple of minutes, order it to sit, give it a prize and play with the animal. By mounting on your leg the dog shows that it needs physical and mental stimulus, so you have to make sure it exercises a lot. |
MOUNTING ON OBJECTS |
ADVICE 440 |
If your dog gets frustrated on its attempt of mounting dogs or people, it will turn its desire to its toys, pillows or carpets. |
Solution |
ADVICE 441 |
When the dog begins taking the carpet, order it "get out" and sprinkle it with a water pistol. Dogs find water very disconcerting. |

CASTRATION |
