When vacations come around, if you have to be away for a considerable amount of time, you have to think about what to do with the dog; taking it with you or leaving it in an appropriate place.
|
You are obliged to think about this and not to leave it for the last minute because it can affect the dog.
|
WHERE TO LEAVE THE DOG |
Right now we are going to focus in the case the dog won't go with you. |
You can look for a friend or family member or leave the dog in a canine residence. |
ADVICE 121 |
In this case you will have to consider the animal's necessities, the type of food it receives as well as the times for the food, the medicines and the vitamins the dog takes, how many times a day it goes out and the length of the walks. |
ADVICE 122 |
A very prudent measure will be to leave the address and the phone number of the veterinary, just in case the dog gets sick. |
ADVICE 123 |
If the people you are going to leave the dog with would a have a dog themselves, it is better to leave them together for a couple of days before the trip to check how they react with living together. |
For example, two dogs that get along well during their walks to the park can have conflicts when one of them gets into the other's territory. The rivalries caused by territory defense are the most frequent fights among dogs. |
ADVICE 124 |
It is important to leave the dog's documents just in case something comes up and the person in charge of the dog would have to provide the vaccination card or any other document. |
ADVICE 125 |
You have to leave the address and the phone number of the place you are going to stay at in case something serious happens. |
ADVICE 126 |
If you decide on a canine residence, you will have to make an exhaustive investigation until you find the one that is more adequate to your dogs' and your own necessities. |
ADVICE 127 |
The breeder or the place in which you bought the dog is a source of information. Many times, the same breeders accept to have paying guest, those dogs that have gone out of their houses and no one better than them will be aware of the necessities of the breed. In the case they don't accept dogs; they will always be able to give you information about the most adequate canine residence for your dog. |
The prices of residences vary, depending on the characteristics of the dogs; if they are big, if they require specific cares, etc. A big dog needs a bigger quantity of food than a small one and also requires a bigger kennel. The dogs with long hair need a grooming service. |
YOU TAKE THE DOG WITH YOU |
Now we are going to focus on the things you have to do in case you decide to take your dog on vacations with you. |
If you get your dog used to traveling as a puppy, you will have no problems when it turns into an adult. |
ADVICE 128 |
A puppy needs to eat and make its necessities more frequently, so the time between one stop and the other will be shorter than when you travel with an adult dog. |
The first thing you should know is the type of transportation you are going to use; plane, ship, train or car. For the first three possibilities, which are public transportation, it is convenient to find out the necessary requirements at the travel agency since they vary notably from one country to another. |
The plane is fastest transportation of our days, so it won't be necessary to worry about food during the trip. |
ADVICE 129 |
Before the flight, it is recommendable to give the dog as much water as it wants. If the trip is long, you should also feed it. |
The size of the animal is also important here. If the dog is small, it won't be odd if they let you take it with you in a traveling bag. |
Some airlines have cages for dogs of different sizes; however, you will have to count on your own one, just in case. |
ADVICE 130 |
It is recommended to attach an identification card that labels the presence of the dog in the cage. |
If you travel oversea, the situation is different. On the ships aimed for passengers, dogs are not allowed to travel with their masters. All ships have dog kennels and areas where you can walk the dog. They should allow them to urinate and defecate in these areas and provide them with food and water. |
In the case of a train, the same thing occurs, because according to the norms of each country will let you take it with you or not. If they wouldn't, you will have to invoice it as in the case of the plane. The conditions of the kennel will be the same you have previously read for the plane. |
ADVICE 131 |
Either in one public way of transportation or the other, you will always need to have a muzzle, whether your dogs is calm or not. This is a rule imposed for all dogs. |
ADVICE 132 |
The car is a more simple way of transportation because it allows us to stop as many times as necessary to feed the dog or give it water, go for a walk or make its necessities. |
Inside the car, the dog's place should be clearly stated. |
ADVICE 133 |
It is not convenient for the dog, either because of its own condition or because it is more excited than normal, goes jumping in the car because it can cause an accident for the lack of visibility or because of a sudden hit. |
ADVICE 134 |
If the dog is small, it is recommendable to use a cage. |
ADVICE 135 |
The medium size and big dogs should have a determined area in the car. On case you have to go away from the car for a moment, leave a window partly opened, especially if the trip coincides with hot weather, the environment will get ventilated and the dog won't suffer asphyxia. Leave the window open in such a way that the dog can not jump out of the car or a stranger can have contact with it. |
ADVICE 136 |
You should never leave the dog in the trunk or let the dog put its head out the window because it can cause it otitis or conjunctivitis and that would be fatal for the dog and you. |
Some dogs are very likely to vomit; give the dog a pill before the trip in order to avoid this and if it is nervous or excited, a tranquilizer. For puppies, you have to give them calcium, mineral salts, etc. |
VACATIONS PLACE |
Abroad |
ADVICE 137 |
If you travel abroad, you have to find out the requirements the country you are going to visit demands in order to let the dog in. |
These requirements vary notable from one country to the other, even when they are located in the same continent. |
|
|
|
ADVICE 138 |
The requirements you should fulfill are: permit from the consulate, vaccination certificate against distemper, veterinary certificate done at the own boarder, quarantine and the confirmation or the hosting reservation. |
The weather |
The first days you will have to go on long walks with your dog, so it will recognize the place and get familiarized with it. In this way, it will get adapted to the environment and the weather. |
ADVICE 139 |
A dog with too much hair stands the low temperatures, but it has more problems getting used to the high ones. |
At restaurants |
Nowadays, there are restaurants and hotels that allow the presence of dogs. You should take the dog to the restaurant only if you are completely sure that t won't disturb anyone and that it will remain quiet under the table. |
At hotels |
ADVICE 140 |
At the hotel, look for a quiet place in the room, far from a draft. |
Put a bowl with water and it is convenient to try to keep the dog away from barking to everyone that walks outside the door. |
