Dog PLAYING WITH OTHER DOGS - Behavior

Go to Index

Almost all dogs like playing with other dogs if they have done it since they were puppies. By general rule, the female dogs usually play more than the male ones that are more territorial and fight more.
ADVICE 336
The first encounters among dogs should take place in a neutral area. Don't let your dog pull the leash because this stimulates aggressiveness.
ENCOUNTERS IN NEUTRAL TERRITORY
Organize the encounters with other dogs trying that all the dogs go on the leash. Make an agreement with other owners. Let them recognize each other, but always alert to the aggressive visual contacts because they will appear, don't have doubts about that.
ADVICE 337
At the first or slightest sign of aggressiveness, deviate your dog's head and distract it with one of its favorite toys.
ENCOUNTERS BEHIND THE FENCE
Once your dog has been successfully introduced everywhere, let it get together with other dogs through a fence or in front of your house.
ADVICE 338
Reward your dog's tranquility.
ENCOUNTERS WITH CATS
The first encounters between a dog and a cat should be watched over.
Keep the cat from running away so the dog won't chase it.
ADVICE 339
ANSWERING TO ORDERS
When the dog is playing with other dogs, control it with verbal and physical orders, you will always be the one who has control over the dog.
ADVICE 340
When you are going to leave, use hand signs, besides the verbal ones, to order the dog to sit. Then approach it and put the leash on it.
POSSESSION CONFLICTS
Avoid the conflicts caused by bones and other desirable articles either not giving them to the dogs or doing it in separate rooms. Many dogs want instinctively what the other dog has, even if the have exactly the same thing and most of them will fight for the bones as well as for the chewable objects.
THE OPPOSITE GENDER
It is less probable for the dogs from different genders to fight, different from the ones of the same gender and similar age and size. The first encounters should be done with both dogs on their leashes.
THE SAME GENDER
ADVICE 341
Be careful when two dogs of the same size and gender get together.
Don't let the dog pull the leash because this can cause aggressiveness. Congratulate your dog if it remains quiet.
A NEW DOG AT HOME
A new dog is a potential threat for the territory of the dog that is already installed. You should never let a newly arrived puppy free in front of the oldest one because this last one can find the puppy disgusting and even provocative.
ADVICE 342
Look for the encounter when both dogs are quiet and relaxed and reward the oldest one for its obedience in front of the newly arrived.
ADVICE 343
Feed both of them in the same room, trying to keep them from seeing each other.
ADVICE 344
Give each dog its own bed, placed in a private corner. Keep on rewarding the oldest one first and don't try to change its routines.
